Plato believed that Socrates chose death over escape because of the fact that man enters into a social contract with the society that he enters. In exchange for security, and protection of rights, man must abide by the rules set forth by this society. Socrates, like all citizens had entered into this contract with the city-state of Athens, and as such, had to follow the laws set for him. It is my belief that mans relationship with the state is such of a cog in the machine, much as it is today. When a person oversteps their place in a tightly regimented society such as Athens, there must be reprecussions due to the shift in paradigm that said society will experience. Over time, society allowed for limited fringe groups much like the ones that exist in the America of today, but most of our society adheres to the position they are granted as a cog in the machine. Socrates consciously made his decision regarding his role in Athenian society, thus allowing for his right to self-determination, which was an abomination in the face of the tightly structured society that was Athens of 2400 years ago. By violating the laws of Athens, Socrates consciously violated the Social Contract which he was held accountable to. In addition, Socrates knew that all men must be held accountable to the same laws, else anarchy would reign. By realizing this, Socrates knew that he must die for the state, and that was his most noble action. It is evident that Plato forsaw the philosophy of the Social Contract that would dominate the Enlightenment through persons such as: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, John Locke,and Thomas Hobbes. Civil Disobedience Essay Historically, in your opinion, has civil disobedience been effective in changing the law? Explain why or why not. What laws do you disagree with or would you consider violating to change? Explain The act of knowingly breaking a law that one feels is morally or ethically unjust is termed Civil Disobedience. While we all have a perception of right and wrong, the guideline for this thinking is our moral compass. While many individuals may see inequalities or injustices in our society, only a few make a physical stand for what they perceive to be right. Some discourage the use of civil disobedience as a tool that should be used for change, the logic being that it directly contradicts our nation’s democratic system. Others support the peaceful act of protesting or challenging laws that are unjust. It is my opinion that while technically breaking the law, it is necessary as it brings immediate attention to an unjust law. As Martin Luther King Jr. stated and I quote â€Å"An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.† Perfect examples of civil disobedience used to change laws are the Ms. Rosa Parks incident, as well as the prolonged civil rights movement initiated by Dr. King. While the above mentioned incidents of civil disobedience assisted in bringing attention to and ultimately changing unjust laws, this change was slow and not complete. One of the laws that I do not agree with is pertaining to parental rights. I feel that in the courts of law in regards to custody and parenting responsibilities, the father always gets the short end of the stick. Never have I seen things being fair and just, unless in the uncommon circumstance where the mother is clearly not fit to be a parent. In many cases the mother has custodial rights, but the child or children are neglected physically, mentally and financially. The mother just used the child for a means to gain financial support.

Despite decades between their writings, the similarities between H.G. Wells and P.K. Dick are numerous and include the fact that both authors were far ahead of their time, had aspirations regarding the universe and a future electronic era to come, had a theme revolving around a distant planet, and challenged humanity. Both science fiction authors were beyond their time. Wells had the capability of â€Å"lifting up our fathers’ hearts with hopes, exciting them with the feeling that a new world was at the point of being born and they were to inherit itâ€Å" (Dickson 17). Throughout all of his works, P.K. Dick â€Å"focused on conveying the truth of his many-faceted visions without regard for critical expectations and genre conventions† (Mackey 128). It is said that â€Å"knowledge of Dick’s biography is essential to an understanding of his work† (Umland 2). This too is similar to Wells. Both authors led fascinating lives and each found their own unique wa y to incorporate their events and interest into their works as demonstrated by their various novels and short stories. In order to fully understand each authors views, style, and most importantly to establish ethos, one must first understand the authors life. Dick and Wells were greatly influenced by the world around them. Whether it be obvious or not, Dick included his life experiences into his books. He also included many of his own personal interest into the book. Wells writings were mostly influenced by his own views, opinions, and interest. It is easy to assume that a book was written simply off a good idea however, there is often more to it. An underlying interest, an attempted degree, an unexpected adventure. In 1949, Dick began studying philosophy at the University of California Berkley (1... ...rld, there is power in numbers and we have the ability to lead future generations further, not only into the science fiction world, but science itself. Despite nearly three quarters of a century between their writings, the ideas these two magnificent authors had were similar in many ways. They both challenged science and society to their limits. By being as one whole is like boring or dull which no one wants that. There is one memoir where stereotyping is everything it is Burro Genius by Victor Villasenor. This book is about Victor living the life of a Mexican and how they struggle with stereotypes and racism. Stereotypes can cause people to fall for them and act out in acceptance, second they can single out which can lead to blocking, lastly pressure to fit in to comprehend.One socialization process is when others stereotypes a person and these influences cause them to believing it those assumptions. Howard and Victor are talking in the playground. When Howard said after the fight â€Å"My parents told me that Mexi-eee-cans always have knives. †(68). Victor did not know what to do because he liked Howard a lot that did not want Howard to get in trouble for getting around bad dirty people. Victor did not though that Mexicans would bring knives everywhere they went. The next day Victor brings not one but two knives to school. Teacher said â€Å"OH, A KNIFE!I TOLD’EM! I TOLD’EM that this was going to happen I was going to catch you little dirty spics with knives that day now I have. †(72). The stereotype that Howard said cause this to happen. Because the stereotype got stuck in Victor’s head. It could have been worse for Victor and people around him if the teacher did not see the knives. Victor could have gone into killing white people if he did not catch. Second discrimination can lead to resistance. I believe..... in honesty I strongly believe that honesty is the best policy. Let’s not go overboard and think that I never tell little white lies, because I do, but usually it is to spare someone’s feelings. I have learned throughout the course of many years that telling big lies only leads to more lies. What will happen when you tell those lies?
